Recent incidents of children dying from cough syrup in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have gripped parents across the country with fear and anxiety. People often give children medicines for coughs and colds without consulting a doctor, but the effects of medicines differ between children and adults. Some medicines can prove fatal for children.
Which medicines should not be given to children, see the complete list
1. Aspirin:
Aspirin, used for headaches, fever, or the flu, can increase the risk of Reye's syndrome in children (especially those under 12 years of age), which causes liver and brain damage. Its use during viral infections is dangerous.
2. Acetaminophen (Paracetamol):
- Do not give to children under 3 months of age.
- Do not give to children with liver disease without doctor's advice.
- If the child is already taking any other medicine, ask the doctor first.
3. Ibuprofen:
- Do not give to children younger than 6 months.
- Consult a doctor before giving it with other medicines.
4. Cold and cough medicines:
- Do not give to children below 6 years of age without doctor's advice.
- These usually do not reduce symptoms at this age.
- Serious side effects, such as drowsiness, upset stomach, skin rash, fast heartbeat, or seizures, may occur at higher doses.
5. Antibiotics:
- Works only in bacterial infections.
- It is wrong to give it for viral infections (cold, flu) and may increase antibiotic resistance.
6. Herbal or natural medicines:
These can also cause allergies or other side effects in children.
Precautions for parents:
- Always give children medicines according to their age and weight.
- Follow the doctor's advice.
- Read the medicine label and dosage instructions carefully.
- If you experience unusual symptoms such as high fever, vomiting, or skin rash, contact a doctor immediately.
