Navi Mumbai International Airport Inauguration LIVE: NMIA has two 3,700-meter-long runways, equipped with modern systems that ensure flights are hassle-free even in low visibility. Commercial flights are expected to begin within a month of the inauguration.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday. Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani was also present. This airport is being called Mumbai's new global gateway. The opening of this airport will boost trade and tourism in Mumbai, Pune, and the Konkan region, and create approximately 300,000 new jobs. The airport has been built at a cost of ₹19,650 crore. Initially, the airport is expected to handle 20 million passengers annually. Passenger flights will begin at the airport in approximately one month.
PM Modi laid the foundation stone in 2018
The project was built under a public-private partnership. PM Modi laid the foundation stone on February 18, 2018. Since taking over the project in 2021, the Adani Group (74%), along with CIDCO (26%), a Maharashtra government agency, has jointly built, operated, and managed it.
Know the capacity of Navi Mumbai Airport
Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has the capacity to handle 20 million passengers annually in the first phase. Its capacity is projected to reach 90 million passengers in the final phase. The airport will handle not only passengers but also 3.25 MMTA (million metric tons per annum) of cargo annually, making it a powerful trade hub in Asia.

How grand is Navi Mumbai Airport?
NMIA has two 3,700-meter-long runways, equipped with modern systems that ensure low visibility is a hassle-free operation for flights. Commercial flights are expected to begin within a month of its inauguration. Once operational, the airport will join the select group of cities around the world, including Mumbai, London, New York, and Tokyo, that have two major airports.
Navi Mumbai Airport is spread over approximately 2,866 acres
This international airport not only provides a major relief and boost to air travel in Mumbai and throughout Western India, but also serves as a powerful example of India's growing global presence. Built on approximately 2,866 acres near Ulwe in Navi Mumbai, the airport's construction has fulfilled a 25-year-old dream for Mumbaikars. India's most ambitious infrastructure project has now become a reality.
The new airport will provide great relief to Mumbaikars
Until now, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has been the hallmark of Mumbai. However, far more people arrive here each day than its capacity. Passenger load, flight congestion, and approximately 1,000 flights daily far exceed its design capacity. CSMIA has two runways, but their intersection limits operations to just one, resulting in flights having to circle repeatedly to land. The construction of a new airport will bring significant relief to Mumbaikars. The opening of Navi Mumbai International Airport will create two international airports in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, saving time and reducing air traffic congestion by half.
