Speculation over Virat Kohli’s cricketing future refuses to die down. While fans are already debating whether the Indian superstar will play in the 2027 World Cup, fresh rumors have surfaced about his IPL career. Reports claim that Kohli declined to sign a contract with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ahead of the 2026 IPL season—fueling talk of his IPL retirement. But what’s the real story behind the uproar?
Why the buzz over the contract?
According to a report by RevSportz journalist Rohit Juglan, Kohli was due to renew a commercial contract with RCB, not his IPL playing contract. When he didn’t sign the extension, social media erupted with speculation that he might be quitting the franchise or even the league altogether.
However, the reality is far less dramatic. This was not Kohli’s player contract with RCB—it was a separate commercial deal involving brand and sponsorship obligations.
Experts clarify the misunderstanding
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra addressed the issue in a YouTube video, clarifying that commercial contracts are entirely different from IPL player agreements. He suggested that the contract in question could be a “dual deal” linked to brand endorsements rather than gameplay. Chopra also reminded fans of Kohli’s long-standing statement: he will play for RCB only, and no other franchise, as long as he remains in the IPL.
Echoing Chopra’s view, sports presenter Tanay Tiwari explained the situation in a detailed video. He said that IPL franchises often sign sponsorship deals that include their players’ participation in advertisements and promotional events. Each player signs such a commercial agreement alongside their main playing contract.
A possible reason for Kohli’s decision
Tanay used a practical example to illustrate the point. RCB’s current jersey sponsor is Puma—a brand for which Kohli was once an ambassador. But now, Kohli endorses another sportswear company, creating a potential conflict of interest. Therefore, he may have chosen not to renew the commercial contract linked to Puma, while remaining fully committed to RCB and the IPL.
