In a remarkable act of sportsmanship, Australian spinner Adam Zampa has withdrawn from the One-Day Cup final against Tasmania, scheduled to take place in Hobart. The decision is not due to injury or personal reasons but stems from Zampa’s desire to give a rising talent, Tanveer Sangha, an opportunity to play in the crucial match.
Zampa has played only once for New South Wales this season alongside Sangha. Acting captain Curtis Patterson confirmed that, given the constraints of a day-night match where it is difficult to accommodate two leg spinners, the team decided to field only one, giving Sangha the nod for the final.
Tanveer Sangha, 24, has been in impressive form, taking 41 List A wickets, 49 first-class wickets, and 79 T20I wickets, including 10 wickets in seven T20 Internationals and two wickets in four ODIs. Zampa’s gesture highlights his commitment to nurturing young talent in Australian cricket.
However, heavy rain is forecasted in Hobart, raising the possibility that the match may be abandoned. In such a scenario, Tasmania would claim the title due to their top position in the points table.
New South Wales squad includes Kurtis Patterson (captain), Sean Abbott, Joel Davies, Ben Dwarshius, Matthew Gilkes, Chris Green, Ryan Hadley, Liam Hatcher, Sam Constad, Josh Philippe, William Salzmann, Lachlan Shaw, and Tanveer Sangha.
Tasmania squad features Nikhil Chaudhary, Nathan Ellis, Bradley Hope, Caleb Jewell, Matt Kuhnemann, Raf McMillan, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Aidan O'Connor, Mitch Owen, Will Prestwidge, Jordan Silk (captain), Billy Stanlake, Matthew Wade, Charlie Wakim, Tim Ward, and Beau Webster.
Zampa’s selfless decision has earned widespread admiration, showcasing both his leadership and dedication to fostering the next generation of Australian cricket talent.
