Digital India Completes 11 Years: Focus Shifts to AI, Semiconductors and Next-Gen Infrastructure

India’s digital transformation journey under the Digital India has entered a new phase as the programme completes 11 years since its launch on July 1, 2015. The government now says the next stage of growth will be driven by artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing, and stronger digital infrastructure.

From connectivity to digital empowerment

Over the past decade, Digital India has expanded internet access, boosted mobile connectivity, and transformed public service delivery. The initiative has helped bring a large population online and accelerated the adoption of digital payments and e-governance systems.

Officials highlight that internet penetration has increased significantly during this period, while mobile data costs have fallen sharply, making India one of the most affordable digital markets globally.

Shift toward AI and semiconductor ecosystem

The government’s focus is now shifting toward emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence and chip manufacturing, as part of a long-term strategy to position India as a global technology hub.

A key pillar of this transition is the IndiaAI Mission, which has been allocated over ₹10,000 crore to strengthen AI research and development in the country.

Under this mission, the government is building large-scale computing infrastructure, including access to tens of thousands of GPUs, to support AI development by researchers, startups, and industry players.

Building AI capabilities

Alongside infrastructure, India is also working on developing multiple language models and expanding access to datasets. Platforms such as AI Kosh are providing thousands of datasets and hundreds of AI models to support innovation in the AI ecosystem.

Semiconductor push for tech independence

Another major priority is strengthening domestic semiconductor manufacturing to reduce reliance on imports and build a self-sustaining hardware ecosystem. This is seen as a critical step for supporting future technologies like AI, advanced electronics, and smart devices.

The road ahead

With the completion of 11 years of Digital India, the government’s vision is shifting from basic digital access to advanced technological leadership. The combined push in AI, semiconductors, and digital infrastructure is aimed at reshaping India’s role in the global technology landscape over the coming decade.
