Kapil Sharma, one of India’s most loved comedians, needs no introduction today. From The Great Indian Laughter Challenge to The Kapil Sharma Show and now The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix, Kapil has ruled television comedy for years. While audiences saw laughter and success on screen, very few knew about the deep personal struggles he was fighting off screen.
Currently in the spotlight for his upcoming film “Kis Kis Ko Pyaar Karu 2,” Kapil recently spoke candidly about depression and the turning point that changed his life.
“After My Father’s Death, Everything Fell Apart”
In a conversation with a news agency, Kapil reflected on the emotional highs and lows of his life. He said,
“Every phase of life has its own beauty. My childhood, when my father was alive, was very different. But after his death in 2004, my life completely went off track.”
Kapil revealed that losing his father left a deep void that he struggled to cope with for years.
Battling Depression at 36
Opening up about one of the darkest phases of his life, Kapil shared,
“I was depressed at the age of 36. I was completely broken. People started saying my career was over.”
However, life slowly began to change. Kapil got married, his show returned, and he made a strong comeback, shooting more than 300 episodes again. Despite professional success, the pain of losing his father never faded.
“I Wish My Father Was There That Day”
Kapil recalled an emotional moment from his early success:
“When I won The Great Indian Laughter Challenge Season 3 and received the ₹10 lakh cheque, I cried. I kept thinking—if only my father was alive to see this.”
He added that some wounds never heal, no matter how much time passes.
When the Whole Society Laughed, He Stood Silent
One of the most touching moments Kapil shared was from the time his show first aired.
“I remember standing quietly outside my house at 9 pm. TVs were on in every home in the society, and people were laughing. I thought, if Dad were alive, he would be so proud.”
Kapil admitted that while he misses his father every day, certain moments make the pain feel even heavier.
From Singer’s Dream to Comedy King
Kapil also spoke about his journey, revealing that he came to Mumbai from Amritsar dreaming of becoming a singer. Fate had other plans. His life changed after winning The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007. He later won Comedy Circus and launched Comedy Nights with Kapil in 2013 under his production house K9 Productions, cementing his place as one of India’s most successful comedians.
