Colds and coughs are common in winter, but many people also experience swelling in their fingers and toes (chilblains). This swelling can be painful and often becomes worse when temperatures drop and there is no sunlight for days. At night, the pain and itching can make sleeping difficult. Since winter is setting in, it’s important to take care of your hands and feet from now on.
Why fingers and toes swell in winter
In extreme cold, the blood vessels in your skin constrict. When you suddenly move to a warm place, they expand again. This rapid change puts stress on the vessels, causing damage and leakage of fluid. This leads to swelling, redness, itching, and sometimes even blisters if ignored.
Closed and comfortable footwear
Walking barefoot too often increases the chance of swelling in your toes. Always wear closed, comfortable footwear during winter. This protects your toes from cold air and reduces swelling and pain. Also keep your hands covered with gloves.
Avoid using cold water
In winter, tank water becomes extremely cold. Washing clothes or dishes with this water can worsen swelling. Try to use freshly drawn water or make the water lukewarm before using it.
Maintain blood circulation
Good blood circulation is key to preventing swelling. Massage your hands and feet daily with almond or olive oil. It helps keep the skin moisturized, preventing dryness, wounds, and pain. Light foot exercises can also reduce stiffness and improve circulation.
Avoid sudden temperature changes
A common winter mistake is coming in from the cold and immediately warming your hands and feet near a heater or hot water. This sudden temperature shift increases the risk of swelling. If your hands or feet are very cold, warm them gradually by wrapping them in a blanket or shawl.
Keep your diet right
A healthy diet helps maintain internal warmth and proper blood flow. Include nuts, whole grains, green vegetables, and seasonal fruits in your meals. Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated as it improves circulation.
