The Kerala government has announced a major welfare initiative aimed at supporting women’s mobility and reducing daily travel expenses. Under the new scheme, women will be able to travel free of cost on government buses starting June 15.
What Is the New Scheme?
The initiative, reportedly named the “Priyadarshini” scheme, was approved in a recent cabinet meeting. Following the decision, the Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan announced that the scheme will provide free bus travel for women across the state.
Importantly, the benefit is universal—there are no age or income restrictions. This means women from all sections of society will be eligible to use the facility.
Where Will It Apply?
Initially, the free travel benefit will be available only on Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) ordinary bus services. Women traveling on these buses will not have to pay any fare.
The government has clarified that this is the first phase of the rollout, and expansion to other categories of buses may be considered in the future, depending on KSRTC’s financial performance and revenue growth.
Financial Impact on the State
According to official estimates, the scheme is expected to place a significant financial burden on KSRTC. The cost is projected at over ₹60 crore per month, which could amount to approximately ₹800 crore annually.
Despite the high expenditure, the government views the scheme as a long-term investment in social welfare and women’s empowerment.
Expected Benefits for Women
The initiative is designed to ease daily commuting costs for women, especially those traveling for:
-
Education
-
Employment
-
Business activities
-
Essential daily needs
Women from rural areas and lower-income households are expected to benefit the most from this scheme, as it can significantly reduce their monthly travel expenses.
Government’s Objective
The scheme is part of Kerala’s broader welfare efforts under its Indira Guarantee initiatives. The government aims to promote financial independence, improve access to public transport, and strengthen women’s participation in education and the workforce.
Final Thoughts
While the scheme involves a substantial financial commitment, it is being positioned as a step toward inclusive development and women’s empowerment. If successful, it could become a model for similar public transport initiatives in other states.
