MS Dhoni: Mahendra Singh Dhoni, popularly known as 'Captain Cool,' has a deep connection with Kharagpur. His professional career began as a ticket collector at Kharagpur station. Thomas' tea shop there still evokes Dhoni's name, as he would often spend hours there.
MS Dhoni: Near the busy Kharagpur Railway Station in West Bengal stands a simple tea stall – Thomas' Tea Stall. Simple in appearance, but its story is extraordinary. It was here that a young boy spent countless hours, unaware that one day he would be known the world over as 'Captain Cool.' In those days, there was neither fame nor fortune. Mahendra Singh Dhoni worked as a ticket collector in Kharagpur while simultaneously pursuing his passion for cricket on the railways. Amid long working hours and big dreams, one place remained with him forever – Thomas' Tea Stall.
Dhoni used to sit for hours at Thomas' tea stall
Thomas's nephew, George, recalled, "This was his favorite place. He would sit here for hours with his friends, drinking tea and chatting." Thomas himself would prepare and serve tea for Dhoni. He never imagined that this quiet, determined young man would create history in world cricket. As the years passed, Dhoni climbed the ladder of global fame. Dhoni led India to its first T20 World Cup title in 2007, then the 50-over World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013.
Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020
He retired from international cricket in 2020, having scored 17,266 runs. He ended his career as a great captain and wicketkeeper, with 16 international centuries and over 800 wickets across all formats. But in Kharagpur, Thomas' life took a difficult turn. He suffered a severe brain stroke and was put on a ventilator for nearly six weeks. Although he survived, he lost his voice. "It was a very difficult time," George said.
Dhoni provided all the help to Thomas
Dhoni couldn't come in person, but he maintained a close connection with Thomas. Through his friend Robin, he regularly checked on Thomas' health, monitored his recovery, kept in touch with doctors, and ensured he received help when needed most. According to the family, he covered the entire cost of Robin's treatment. George added, "If it hadn't been for timely help, Thomas might not be with us today."
Dhoni also saved Thomas' shop from being demolished.
Their relationship went beyond just medical assistance. There was a time when the tea shop was under threat of demolition by the authorities, jeopardizing Thomas's sole source of livelihood. Once again, help arrived. Robin contacted Dhoni, who spoke with railway officials. The shop was saved and financial assistance was provided to rebuild it. Today, Thomas cannot speak, but his story speaks volumes.
Dhoni's photo still hangs proudly inside the shop. Customers still come, not just for tea, but to learn a story beyond cricket: one of humility, loyalty, and unbreakable bonds. Because sometimes the journey to greatness begins with something as simple as a cup of tea.
