Team India clinched the 2026 T20 World Cup in dominant fashion, earning widespread acclaim and a reward of ₹131 crore from the BCCI. Yet, amid the celebrations, concerns about fielding performance have put fielding coach T. Dilip’s future under scrutiny. India registered the highest number of dropped catches in the tournament, prompting discussions on whether the BCCI will renew his contract, which expires in June 2026.
T. Dilip has been associated with the national team since 2021, initially during Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach. His contract was extended after the 2024 T20 World Cup but was later terminated following a disappointing Australia tour. Reports indicate that Rohit Sharma personally requested then-head coach Gautam Gambhir and the BCCI to reinstate Dilip, resulting in a one-year extension. Dilip subsequently served as fielding coach during the recent T20 World Cup.
While T. Dilip brings extensive experience—having coached the Hyderabad Cricket Association from 2007 to 2019 and later the National Cricket Academy (NCA)—the BCCI is reportedly exploring alternatives, including the possibility of appointing a foreign fielding coach. His continuation in the role will depend on the board’s evaluation in the coming weeks.
As the cricketing world celebrates India’s title, the decision on T. Dilip highlights the BCCI’s ongoing focus on fielding standards and performance accountability.
