Many people experience gas and bloating after eating kidney beans and chickpeas because these legumes are heavy and contain complex sugars that are difficult to digest. Dr. Anjali Tiwari, Senior Dietitian at Apollo Spectra Hospital, advises that the best time to eat these beans is in the afternoon since they provide sustained energy and help keep you full longer. Consuming them at night can lead to digestive problems like gas and bloating for some individuals.
Proper preparation is crucial to minimize these issues. Soaking kidney beans and chickpeas for 8 to 12 hours, preferably overnight, helps break down complex sugars and remove harmful substances, aiding digestion. Before soaking, wash the beans thoroughly with fresh water. After soaking, discard the water and boil them in fresh water, cooking them on low heat until they are soft and fully cooked. Adding digestive spices such as asafoetida (hing), cumin (jeera), carom seeds (ajwain), and ginger during cooking can further prevent gas formation.
Kidney beans are rich in calories, water, carbohydrates, protein, fiber, and several minerals like folate, copper, iron, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin K, along with antioxidants. Chickpeas contain similar nutrients including protein, zinc, phosphorus, vitamin B6, and potassium. Eating these legumes in moderation, cooked well, and with the right pairing such as rice or whole grains can enhance digestion and health benefits while reducing digestive discomfort.
To reduce bloating after meals, some people also find relief by drinking a glass of water with a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar or fresh lemon juice before eating. Building a healthy gut through gradual introduction of legumes and including prebiotics and probiotics in the diet can also improve digestion over time.
In summary, soaking, thorough cooking, adding digestive spices, mindful portion control, and proper pairing with grains are effective ways to enjoy kidney beans and chickpeas without the unwanted side effects of gas and bloating.
