Market-bought turmeric is often adulterated with synthetic dyes like metanil yellow, lead chromate, starch, or flour—substances that may harm your health. The safest alternative is to make pure turmeric powder at home using raw turmeric (kacchi haldi). Homemade turmeric not only gives rich colour and aroma but also contains the natural curcumin that makes turmeric so medicinally valuable.
Turmeric has been used for over 4,000 years for healing, and even Marco Polo noted its similarity to saffron in 1280. But to enjoy these benefits, purity is important—so here is the right method to make fresh, unadulterated turmeric powder at home.
What raw turmeric looks like
Raw turmeric looks like ginger from the outside but is bright yellow inside due to its curcumin content. Sometimes even the raw roots are coated with yellow powder, so washing is essential.
How to make turmeric powder from raw turmeric
-
Wash thoroughly
• Scrub the raw turmeric well with water.
• Wipe completely dry with a cloth to remove moisture and any surface coating. -
Check for damage
• Examine each bulb.
• Cut and discard any blackened, soft, or damaged parts. -
Boil the turmeric
• Place the turmeric in a large pan of water and boil it.
• Test with a fork—if it pierces easily, turn off the heat.
Boiling removes raw odour, kills microbes, and softens the haldi. -
Drain the water
• Strain the boiled turmeric using a sieve.
• Let all excess water drip out. -
Sun-dry the turmeric
• Spread the boiled turmeric on a cotton cloth.
• Dry in sunlight for 1–2 days.
• After drying a bit, cut the pieces into smaller chunks—this speeds drying.
Alternative: Dry in an oven
• Keep temperature low (around 50–60°C).
• Dry until all moisture is gone.
-
Ensure complete dryness
• The turmeric should feel completely hard and brittle.
• If even slightly soft, the powder may spoil. -
Grind the turmeric
• Break into small pieces using a mortar or rolling pin.
• Grind in a mixer until fine. -
Sieve the powder
• Pass the powder through a fine sieve.
• Re-grind the larger leftover pieces.
Your pure, chemical-free haldi powder is ready.
Benefits of homemade turmeric
• No artificial colours or preservatives
