“I Also Have the Right to Make Mistakes”: Why Gautam Gambhir Said This After India’s ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 Victory

After guiding India national cricket team to victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, head coach Gautam Gambhir responded to his critics and openly spoke about the challenges he faced during the last 18 months.

In a post-tournament interview, Gambhir admitted that he had made several mistakes but emphasized that everyone in the game has the right to make them.

“I’m human, and I have the right to make mistakes. Everyone has that right—players and coaches. I’ve made many mistakes in the last 18 months,” Gambhir said.

His statement came after months of criticism over some of his team selections and strategies before the tournament.

Gambhir Explains His Statement

Gambhir clarified that he does not mind mistakes if they are made with the right intentions.

According to him, mistakes are part of the process in sports, but decisions taken with wrong intentions are unacceptable. He also stressed that he has always maintained honesty with the players in the dressing room.

“I have always been honest with everyone in that dressing room. I talk to every player eye to eye. For the next 18 months, or however long I remain here, I will continue doing the same,” he said.

Strong Support for Players

Throughout the tournament, Gambhir strongly backed his players even when they were struggling with form.

Before the World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav faced criticism due to a lean patch, while Abhishek Sharma also went through a difficult phase during the competition. Despite the pressure, Gambhir maintained faith in them.

He explained that people often misunderstand the difference between being out of form and simply not scoring runs.

Gambhir also showed confidence in Sanju Samson by promoting him to open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma instead of Ishan Kishan. The decision paid off as Samson delivered outstanding performances and was eventually named Player of the Tournament.

With this victory, India secured the T20 World Cup title for the second consecutive time.

Gambhir’s Next Big Target: Olympics

Looking ahead, Gambhir revealed that his next dream is to be part of India’s campaign in the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Cricket is expected to feature in the Los Angeles Games, and Gambhir said representing India at the Olympics would be a matter of great pride.

“I would love to be part of the Olympics. Representing India at the Olympics would be a huge honour,” he said.

With India currently one of the strongest teams in world cricket, the country is expected to be a serious contender for a gold medal in cricket at the 2028 Olympics.
