Scientists at IIT Madras have developed a groundbreaking device that allows diabetes patients to check their blood sugar levels painlessly, eliminating the need for finger pricks. Unlike conventional machines that require a needle prick and costly disposable strips, this innovative device employs reusable electronics and a disposable microneedle sensor to offer a low-cost, user-friendly testing solution.
Professor Swaminathan explained that the device features a low-power display and can be used conveniently at home, removing the necessity for frequent hospital or lab visits. This advancement aims to make daily sugar monitoring easier and less painful for the over 100 million diabetes patients in India, whose numbers are rising due to lifestyle changes and poor diet.
Currently, most patients test their sugar levels multiple times a day through painful needle pricks. The IIT Madras invention promises to improve patient compliance and comfort significantly, pending successful clinical validation and widespread adoption. This development could revolutionize diabetes management by providing a cost-effective, painless alternative to traditional blood sugar testing methods.
