Indians top the list in getting citizenship of rich nations; this country has the most Indians, leaving China behind

According to the new report 'International Migration Outlook 2025' of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), citizens of India are at the forefront in getting citizenship of developed countries.

Indian citizens are at the forefront of acquiring citizenship in developed countries. This is stated in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development's (OECD) new report, "International Migration Outlook 2025." According to this report, approximately 2.25 lakh Indians will acquire citizenship of an OECD member country in 2023. This is the highest number ever recorded, and India remains at the top position globally.

Indians are moving towards developed countries

The report stated that a total of 2.8 million people acquired citizenship in developed countries in 2023, slightly higher than in 2022. India was followed by 132,000 citizens from the Philippines and 92,400 from China, who obtained citizenship in OECD countries. India has consistently been the largest source of new citizens for these countries for the past two years.

Indians are taking citizenship of which country

The highest number of Indians took Canadian citizenship. In 2023, 78,487 Indians became Canadian citizens, while this number was 59,405 in 2022. In 2013, this figure was only 15,388. The report said that this increase has happened due to Canada's stable policies, speedy process of permanent residence and Indian professionals who have settled in the last decade. However, experts say that this number may decrease in 2024 due to inflation in Canada, shortage of houses, strict immigration rules and tension between India and Canada.

Indians are also going to these countries

In addition to Canada, a large number of Indians also acquired citizenship in the US and Australia. In 2023, 52,360 Indians became US citizens, down from 66,670 in 2022. Meanwhile, 40,361 Indians acquired Australian citizenship, up from 30,160 the previous year. A total of 171,000 Indians acquired citizenship in these three countries alone, accounting for nearly 76 percent of India's total citizenship recipients in 2023.

People are also going from China to other countries

The report also states that in 2023, about 600,000 Indians went to OECD countries for work or studies, which is eight percent more than in 2022. Of these, the highest number of 1.44 lakh Indians reached Britain, many of whom went under health and care worker visas. About 1.4 lakh new Indian migrants also reached Canada, while the number of those going to America decreased to 68,000. On the other hand, migration from China has also increased. In 2023, 3.7 lakh Chinese citizens went to OECD countries, the highest number of which include America, South Korea and Japan.
