IPL 2026: BCCI’s new 3.5-hour rule for practice matches — teams face strict warning

Ahead of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced strict new guidelines for all 10 franchises, focusing on fair play and pitch protection.

The board has clearly stated that any violation of these rules could lead to serious consequences, making compliance mandatory for every team.

3.5-hour limit for practice matches

One of the biggest changes is the time restriction on practice matches played under floodlights.

  • Practice matches can last no more than 3.5 hours

  • Teams are allowed to play a maximum of two practice matches

  • Prior approval from the BCCI is mandatory

Importantly, these matches cannot be played on the main match pitch, ensuring that surfaces remain fresh for official games.

Strict rules for nets and pitch usage

The BCCI has also tightened rules regarding practice facilities:

  • Teams cannot use nets or pitches assigned to opponents

  • Each franchise will be provided with separate and fresh practice areas

  • If one team is training, the other team cannot access the same nets or practice wickets

Additionally, there will be a complete ban on practice sessions on the Main Square starting four days before a team’s first home match.

If required, teams will be provided with alternative practice venues free of cost.

Visiting teams get priority

In case of scheduling conflicts between two teams, the visiting team will be given priority for practice sessions. This move is aimed at reducing any potential home advantage and ensuring fairness.

Why these rules matter

The BCCI introduced these changes after complaints in previous seasons about excessive use of pitches, which reportedly affected match quality.

With these new rules, the board aims to:

  • Protect pitch conditions throughout the tournament

  • Ensure equal preparation opportunities for all teams

  • Prevent home teams from gaining undue advantage

A push for fairness in IPL

These strict guidelines signal the BCCI’s intent to maintain high standards and competitive balance in the IPL.
