Delhi’s air quality continues to worsen, with the AQI touching 428 on November 11. Under such conditions, the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Phase 3 has been implemented in the city. The toxic air is not only harmful to your lungs but also causes eye irritation and fatigue. Many Delhiites are avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities — but if you’re craving some fresh air, it might be time for a quick getaway.
If you’re looking for a break from pollution, here are three destinations in Himachal Pradesh where the air quality is far better and the scenery breathtaking.
1. Manali – Fresh Air and Mountain Adventures
Manali, one of Himachal’s most popular hill stations, currently has an AQI of around 62, making it a much cleaner and healthier escape compared to Delhi. The cool weather makes this season perfect for sightseeing and adventure activities.
You can start your trip by visiting the Hidimba Devi Temple, believed to date back to the Mahabharata era, surrounded by deodar and pine forests. Don’t miss Jogini Falls, located about 4–5 km from the town, which is perfect for short treks and serene views.
Other must-visits include Van Vihar, Rahla Falls, and Rohtang Pass. If you enjoy adventure, head to Solang Valley, just 15 km away, where you can try paragliding, skiing, cable car rides, zorbing, and even helicopter tours.
Accommodation options range from budget stays to luxury resorts, and local taxis are easily available for sightseeing.
How to Reach:
Manali is about 500 km from Delhi. There’s no direct train, so you can take one to Chandigarh (270 km) or Kalka (250 km) and continue by bus or taxi. The nearest airport is Kullu-Manali Airport (Bhuntar), about 50 km away.
2. Shimla – The Queen of Hills with Clean, Crisp Air
Shimla’s current AQI is around 60, making it another great destination to breathe freely and relax. The best time to visit is from September to November, when the hills are lush and the weather is pleasant.
For a quiet escape, visit Samay Hills, where sunrise and sunset views are mesmerizing. Don’t miss Scandal Point, located where Mall Road meets Ridge Road, one of the city’s most happening spots.
Nature lovers can visit the Himalayan Bird Park, home to a variety of bird species, or explore Kiala Forest near the Kotkhai Valley. You can also trek to Jakhu Hill, the highest peak in Shimla, or enjoy a day trip to Naldehra, Shaily Peak, or Kufri for hiking and snow adventures.
How to Reach:
Shimla is approximately 350 km from Delhi. You can drive, take a bus, or travel by train to Kalka, then continue by taxi. Jubbarhatti Airport, located about 20 km from Shimla, also offers limited flight options via Chandigarh.
The Bottom Line
With Delhi’s pollution levels hitting alarming highs, a weekend getaway to the hills can be the perfect way to give your lungs a break. Manali and Shimla not only offer cleaner air and scenic beauty but also a refreshing change of pace. So pack your bags, breathe easy, and enjoy a few days of peace amid the mountains.
