PM Modi Visits Thanthania Kalibari: Before his historic roadshow in Kolkata, PM Modi offered prayers at the 300-year-old Thanthania Kalibari. This temple is renowned for its unique tradition of offering non-vegetarian offerings (Dab-Chingdi) to Goddess Kali. This custom was started by Ramakrishna Paramhansa himself. By bowing his head at this awakened temple of historical significance, PM Modi expressed his deep respect for Bengal's ancient spiritual and cultural roots.
Prime Minister Modi visited Thanthania Kalibari, the unique temple in North Kolkata where Ramakrishna Paramhansa initiated the tradition of offering non-vegetarian offerings to the Goddess. By paying obeisance at this 300-year-old awakened shrine, the PM paid homage to Bengal's ancient and diverse spiritual culture. As the echo of conch shells and chants of "Jai Shri Ram" filled the streets of Kolkata, the first echoes of these echoes lingered on a 300-year-old doorframe. Before his historic roadshow in North Kolkata, Prime Minister Narendra Modi bowed his head at the shrine where the devotional voices of Ramakrishna Paramhansa once echoed. This is the shrine of Thanthania Kalibari, where the air still breathes the history of 1703. With a tilak on his forehead and a lamp of devotion in his hand, as PM Modi stood before the awakened idol of Goddess Siddheshwari, he appeared not just a politician but a devotee. This is the same temple whose walls are engraved with the words, "Shankarar Hriday Maaje, Kali Viraje." But the most unique aspect of this temple is a tradition that has challenged centuries of dogmatic beliefs. Here, the offering of "Dab-Chingdi" is made to the Mother Goddess. From this center of faith, spirituality, and Bengal's ancient identity, PM Modi has given a divine touch to his election campaign.
Thanthania Kalibari: A 300-Year-Old Proud History
Ancient Heritage: Established in 1703, this temple is one of Kolkata's oldest and most revered Kali temples. Its heritage, spanning over 320 years, predates the city of Kolkata's modern form.
Form of Maa Siddheshwari: Here, Goddess Kali is worshipped as Maa Siddheshwari. Devotees believe that the presiding deity here is awakened and fulfills every wish asked with a sincere heart.
Ramakrishna Paramahamsa's Involvement: Swami Ramakrishna Paramahamsa frequently visited this temple and sang hymns, immersed in devotion to Goddess Siddheshwari. His words, "Shankarar Hriday Majhe, Kali Viraje" (Mother Kali resides in the heart of Shankara), are still inscribed on the temple walls.
The Thanthaniya
Kalibari is one of the few Kali temples in India where non-vegetarian offerings are made to the goddess. There's a special story behind this unique tradition:
Origin of the tradition: The practice of offering meat to the Mother Goddess was started by Ramakrishna Paramahamsa himself. He offered "Dab-Chingdi" (prawns cooked in coconut) to Mother Siddheshwari, praying for the speedy recovery of Brahmananda Keshav Chandra Sen.
A symbol of faith: This tradition has continued ever since. When Ramakrishna himself fell ill, his followers prayed for his health at this very temple and offered non-vegetarian offerings to the goddess.
Political and Cultural Analysis
Prime Minister Modi's visit to this temple before his roadshow is not just a religious ritual but also a profound cultural message. Respect for the identity of "Maa Kali" and Bengali culture has always been an important aspect of Bengal politics. By choosing a historic site like Thanthania Kalibari, PM Modi has honored Kolkata's ancient roots and the spiritual heritage associated with the Ramakrishna Mission. This move further strengthens his cultural acceptance among Bengali society.
