Heavy, expensive sarees—adorned with intricate zari work, embroidery, and sequins—are stunning for special occasions. Proper maintenance is crucial to ensure these iconic garments retain their brilliant shine and fabric texture so they look as good as new every time you wear them.
Here is a guide on how to clean and store your heavy sarees correctly:
Cleaning and Washing Precautions
The cleaning method for a heavy saree must be gentle to protect the delicate work and fabric.
-
Initial Wash is Key: Always choose dry cleaning for a new saree's first wash. This helps maintain its color and fabric integrity.
-
Dry Cleaning is Best: For most heavy sarees, dry cleaning remains the safest option.
-
At-Home Washing Tips: If you must wash at home:
-
Use a mild liquid detergent in lukewarm water.
-
Do not rub vigorously; gently dip the saree in the water and take it out shortly after.
-
For sarees with zari or sequins, avoid soap completely. Instead, wrap the saree in a soft cotton cloth and clean it gently.
-
☀️ The Right Way to Dry
Improper drying can lead to color fading and fabric damage.
-
Avoid Direct Sun: Never dry Banarasi silk or other heavy sarees in direct sunlight, as this can fade the color. Always dry them inside out in the shade.
-
Prevent Stretching: Hanging a heavy saree on a thin rope can stretch and distort the fabric. Instead, spread it out flat on a clean cotton sheet or a bed to dry.
📦 Proper Storage is Essential
Long-term storage is where most sarees get damaged. Following these steps helps maintain their pristine condition:
-
Avoid Plastic Bags: Never store heavy sarees in plastic bags, as plastic traps moisture, which can lead to mold and mildew.
-
Use Soft Wraps: Always wrap sarees in cotton or a soft muslin cloth to allow the fabric to breathe.
-
Folding over Hanging: Hanging a saree with heavy zari or embroidery on a hanger can cause the fabric to stretch and tear. It's best to store such sarees folded.
-
Protect from Pests: Place neem leaves or camphor between the folds of the sarees (not directly on the fabric) to deter insects.
-
Airing and Refolding: Every 3 to 4 months, take the saree out, let it air out for a while, and most importantly, change the folds. Keeping it in the same fold for too long can damage the threads along the crease.
🧵 Care by Fabric Type
Specific fabrics require tailored care:
-
Banarasi Sarees (with Zari): Never soak these in water. Dry cleaning is highly recommended to protect the metal thread work.
-
Kanjeevaram (Pure Silk): Always dry in the shade and store it wrapped in a cotton cloth.
-
Brocade Sarees: These contain golden threads and must be protected from moisture to prevent tarnishing.
