The legal battle over the estate of late industrialist Sanjay Kapoor, valued at several thousand crore rupees, has intensified. The Delhi High Court has issued notices to Priya Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor’s widow, and several other respondents—including Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor’s two children—on a petition filed by Sanjay Kapoor’s mother, Rani Kapoor.
The petition seeks the dissolution of the RK Family Trust, which allegedly holds substantial assets, including stakes in major companies. However, the High Court has not passed any interim order at this stage.
Court Issues Notice, Seeks Responses
Justice Mini Pushkarna, while hearing the matter, issued notices to 22 respondents, including:
-
Priya Kapoor
-
Rani Kapoor’s seven grandchildren
-
Karisma Kapoor’s two children
The court has directed all parties to file their responses. The application seeking interim relief to maintain status quo over the trust will be heard on March 23.
Allegations Made by Rani Kapoor
In her petition, Rani Kapoor has alleged that the RK Family Trust was fraudulently created to transfer her assets without her knowledge or consent. She claims that after suffering a stroke in 2017, she was physically dependent and was made to sign multiple documents—some allegedly blank—under the pretext of administrative convenience.
According to the plea:
-
Sanjay Kapoor and his third wife Priya Kapoor allegedly misused her trust
-
Her properties were transferred to the trust without informed consent
-
After Sanjay Kapoor’s death in June last year, Priya Kapoor allegedly rushed to take control of key Sona Group companies
Rani Kapoor has claimed that she was left with no share in the assets, while around 60% went to Priya Kapoor and 40% to the children.
Arguments Presented in Court
Senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, appearing for Rani Kapoor, argued that the trust was structured in a manner that excluded the elderly mother entirely. He told the court that the trust was created within months of Sanjay Kapoor’s marriage and effectively transferred all assets away from Rani Kapoor.
He also sought the production of all documents related to the trust, including minutes of meetings and financial records.
Justice Pushkarna emphasized transparency, stating that nothing can be concealed from the court, and directed Priya Kapoor to disclose all relevant documents.
Priya Kapoor’s Stand
Senior advocate Akhil Sibal, representing Priya Kapoor, argued that the petition was not maintainable and said he would file an application seeking its dismissal. He contended that a trustee challenging the trust itself was legally untenable.
Sibal assured the court that documents would be produced to establish the legitimacy of the trust, adding that additional records would be submitted if the court required them. He also maintained that no interim relief should be granted at the first hearing.
