Sadhguru Explains the Right Way to Drink and Store Water for Maximum Health Benefits

Water is essential to human life — it makes up about 60–70% of body weight, maintains temperature, aids digestion, and helps transport nutrients while flushing out toxins. Yet, few people truly understand the right way to drink and store water to get its full benefits. In a recent blog post for the Isha Foundation, spiritual leader Sadhguru shared insights on how to handle water mindfully to enhance both physical and spiritual well-being.

Why the Way You Drink Water Matters
According to Sadhguru, the quality and energy of the water you consume directly affect your health, vitality, and mental clarity. The method of storage and the manner in which you drink water can influence its life-giving properties.

How to Store Water Correctly
Traditionally, people stored water in vessels made of metals like copper, brass, or a mix of metals. Sadhguru notes that in ancient times, copper vessels were cleaned at night with tamarind and turmeric, sacred ash was applied, and the vessel was filled with water and topped with a flower before lighting a lamp beside it. The next morning, this energized water was consumed.

Experts also recommend storing water in earthen pots during summer, as they naturally cool the water, soothe the stomach, and maintain its freshness.

The Right Way to Drink Water
Sadhguru emphasizes that water should be consumed with gratitude and awareness. “Before drinking, pause for a moment to feel thankful,” he says. Water, being the essence of life, should be treated with respect. Ideally, you should drink water using your hands. If that’s not possible, and you’re given water in a metal glass, hold it with both hands while drinking.

Ideal Temperature for Drinking Water
For those on a path of self-improvement, Sadhguru advises drinking water that’s slightly warmer than body temperature—about four degrees higher. Since normal body temperature is around 37°C, water between 33°C and 41°C is ideal. Students can drink cooler water (up to 8°C), while homemakers can have it up to 12°C.

How Much Water Should You Drink?
Sadhguru cautions against ignoring thirst. He recommends drinking about 10% more water than what your body signals as necessary. Essentially, drink water within 20–30 minutes after feeling thirsty instead of delaying it.

Include Water-Rich Foods in Your Diet
Besides drinking water, Sadhguru highlights the importance of eating water-rich foods. Around 70% of your diet should come from water-containing fruits and vegetables. Fruits like watermelon, oranges, and cucumbers, and leafy greens like spinach, not only hydrate but also improve digestion, boost energy, and aid nutrient absorption.
