Struggling Sai Sudharsan Faces Tough Test Ahead After Another Failure in Test Cricket

India's young left-handed batsman Sai Sudharsan, who has been given opportunities following the retirement of senior players, is currently under pressure due to a string of low scores in Test cricket. In the first innings of the ongoing first Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad (October 2), Sudharsan scored only 7 runs before falling to spin bowling, marking his sixth failure in seven innings.
This Test match was Sudharsan's fourth, and he has managed just one half-century in those seven innings—an innings of 61 runs against England in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester, earlier this year. Despite a strong start in IPL 2025, where he won the Orange Cap with 759 runs at an average above 54, Sudharsan has struggled to translate that success into the demanding Test arena.
Following his debut in England, where conditions are notoriously tough for newcomers, Sudharsan was promoted to number three in the batting order after Shubman Gill moved down. However, inconsistency and a tendency to lose his wicket soon after settling are raising concerns for Team India's management. With limited batting opportunities expected in a potentially dominant home Test series, each innings is crucial for Sudharsan to cement his place.
Given the depth of talented batsmen available, persistent low scores may lead to his exclusion from the upcoming series against South Africa if he does not improve swiftly. The team management is known to back young players but will need consistent performances to justify continued selection.
In summary, Sai Sudharsan’s current Test statistics—147 runs in 7 innings at an average of 21—highlight a challenging phase in his career, and the coming matches will be critical in determining his place in Team India’s Test squad.
