SUV Wars: Hyundai to Challenge Nexon EV and Grand Vitara with Two Bold New Launches

The Indian automotive landscape is bracing for a major shift as Hyundai Motor India officially confirms the arrival of two brand-new SUVs. Detailed in the company’s FY2025-26 investor presentation, CEO Tarun Garg revealed that these models are designed to dominate the mid-size and compact electric segments. With fresh branding and all-new names, Hyundai is ready to take the fight directly to Tata Motors and Mahindra.

1. The New Mid-Size Contender: Hyundai’s ‘Bayon-Based’ SUV

Hyundai is set to expand its mid-size footprint by launching a new model to sit alongside the iconic Creta. Heavily inspired by the Hyundai Bayon—a popular crossover in Europe and the Middle East—this SUV represents a tactical move to squeeze competitors out of the segment.

  • Global Roots: The international model features a 2,580 mm wheelbase, balancing compact agility with mid-size comfort.

  • The Target: While earlier rumors suggested it might target entry-level crossovers, Hyundai is now positioning this model to rival heavyweights like the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, Toyota Hyryder, and the upcoming Tata Sierra.

  • Strategy: Much like Maruti’s multi-product approach, Hyundai aims to offer more variety in the ₹10L–₹20L price bracket.

2. The Electric Disruptor: Codenamed HE1i

Hyundai’s second major move is in the EV space. Codenamed HE1i, this compact electric SUV is largely based on the global Inster EV. It aims to solve the biggest hurdle for EV buyers: charging speed and range.

  • Cutting-Edge Tech: Built on the scalable E-GMP platform, it supports ultra-fast 800V charging, a feature usually reserved for luxury EVs.

  • Impressive Range: Global versions offer battery packs (42kWh and 49kWh) with ranges up to 355 km (WLTP). However, with platform optimization, ranges exceeding 500 km are anticipated for higher trims.

  • The Rivalry: The HE1i is a direct shot at the Tata Nexon EV and the Mahindra XUV3XO EV, aiming to offer premium tech in a compact, city-friendly package.

Timeline & Impact

Both SUVs are expected to hit Indian roads within the current fiscal year. By diversifying its portfolio with a high-tech EV and a stylish new petrol/hybrid mid-size SUV, Hyundai is signaling that it is no longer content with just the Creta's success—it wants total market leadership.
