Indian consumers are not benefiting from the sharp decline in gold and silver prices in the international market. Despite the global recession, Indian buyers are paying more for gold and silver. The main reason for this difference is the central government's decision to increase import duty by 15 percent and place silver in the restricted category. This decision has abruptly halted the inflow of gold and silver into the country, resulting in prices in the domestic market not falling as much as in foreign markets.

Global Situation and India
According to the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) and the latest market data, the price of gold in the international market fell from $4,650 to $4,286 per ounce in May, a significant drop of nearly 10%. In contrast, the price of gold in the Indian market fell only 3% from $152,000 per 10 grams during the same period, with silver seeing a similar decline.

Silver prices fell from $74.5 to $68.39 per ounce in the international market, representing a decline of nearly 8%. However, silver prices in the Indian bullion market remained stable at ₹243,000 per kilogram, just 4% below its record high of ₹245,000. Clearly, the decline in imports into India has led to a supply shortage in the domestic market, preventing a sharp decline in prices.
