Uttar Pradesh is moving rapidly toward becoming a major defence manufacturing hub, with the state government positioning it as a key pillar in its ambition to build a ₹95 lakh crore economy and contribute to India’s long-term self-reliance in defence production.
At the centre of this transformation is the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC), which is already attracting strong investment interest and industrial activity across multiple nodes in the state.
Massive Investment Momentum in Defence Corridor
Launched in 2018 under the Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), the defence corridor spans 2,095 hectares across six key nodes:
- Kanpur
- Jhansi
- Lucknow
- Aligarh
- Agra
- Chitrakoot
So far, the project has received investment proposals worth ₹39,571.09 crore, with 1,141.79 hectares of land already allocated to industries.
Kanpur Leads in Investments
Out of the total investments, Kanpur has emerged as the top destination, followed by other major nodes:
- Kanpur: ₹12,948 crore
- Jhansi: ₹12,190 crore
- Lucknow: ₹4,850.67 crore
- Aligarh: ₹4,581 crore
- Chitrakoot: ₹4,392 crore
- Agra: ₹607 crore
Overall, around 65 companies have taken land in the corridor to set up defence and related manufacturing units.
Projects Worth ₹13,486 Crore Already Underway
Work has already started on projects valued at approximately ₹13,486 crore, which are expected to generate around 15,300 jobs. This early phase shows strong progress from planning to execution.
Officials say the corridor is playing a key role in supporting Uttar Pradesh’s broader goal of becoming a $1 trillion economy, while also creating high-skilled employment opportunities.
Key Defence Manufacturing Projects
Several major companies have already established or begun operations in the corridor:
- Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Ltd. (Kanpur): ₹1,500 crore ammunition facility
- Aeroloy Technologies (Lucknow): ₹320 crore titanium casting unit
- BrahMos Aerospace (Lucknow): ₹300 crore missile production and assembly unit
- Veriwin Defence Pvt Ltd (Aligarh): Small arms manufacturing facility worth ₹65 crore
- Amitec: ₹330 crore space-related infrastructure unit
Other supporting industries in precision components, defence textiles, safety equipment, and materials are also operational or under development.
Growing Role of MSMEs and Supply Chains
Experts believe the corridor will significantly benefit local MSMEs, enabling technology transfer, supplier ecosystem growth, and stable demand from large defence manufacturers. This is expected to create a multiplier effect across logistics, construction, and service sectors in nearby cities.
Strategic Industrial Expansion
With nine operational manufacturing units, rising private sector participation, and strong policy support from the state, UPDIC is quickly transitioning from a planned initiative to a functioning industrial ecosystem.
The presence of companies in aerospace, missile systems, and advanced materials further strengthens its position as a growing hub for defence and high-tech manufacturing.
Bottom Line
Uttar Pradesh’s defence corridor is emerging as one of India’s most ambitious industrial projects. With multi-crore investments, expanding infrastructure, and early-stage production already underway, the state is steadily building its case as a future defence manufacturing powerhouse.
