As winter approaches, people often turn to dry fruits to stay warm and boost immunity. Among the most popular choices are almonds and walnuts — both rich in essential nutrients and known for their brain-boosting properties. However, many still wonder which one is more effective in keeping the body warm during the cold season.
Both almonds and walnuts are loaded with nutrients like vitamin E, magnesium, fiber, calcium, protein, and healthy fats. Walnuts, in particular, are also a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B6. Experts recommend including both nuts in the diet, as they provide numerous health benefits for people of all ages.
Ayurveda expert Kiran Gupta from Jaipur explains that both almonds and walnuts help maintain body warmth, but walnuts are slightly more effective in protecting against winter chills. They generate internal heat, which helps the body fight off colds and infections. She also advises soaking both almonds and walnuts in water before consuming them for better digestion and nutrient absorption.
According to Payal Sharma, Senior Dietitian at Dharamshila Narayana Hospital, walnuts are a superior source of omega-3 fatty acids compared to almonds. This makes them particularly beneficial for vegetarians who may lack other omega-3 sources in their diets. However, she recommends eating walnuts in moderation during summer due to their warming nature.
Both nuts have impressive health benefits. Almonds improve memory, help lower bad cholesterol, increase good cholesterol, and support healthy blood sugar levels due to their fiber content. They also promote healthy skin and hair and aid in weight management. Walnuts, on the other hand, are excellent for brain health and digestion. Their antioxidants and omega-3s help reduce bad cholesterol and improve overall heart health.
