What vitamin deficiency makes you feel cold: Doctors say that feeling excessively cold isn't just due to weakness, but rather, there are specific reasons behind it. Let's explore those reasons and learn how to increase natural body heat.
Winter Tips: It's common to feel a mild chill as winter approaches. However, if you feel much colder than others, your hands and feet are always icy, or you can't tolerate the cold at all, it could be a sign of a nutrient deficiency. Renowned Ayurvedic doctor Salim Zaidi has shared a video on his YouTube channel regarding this. In this video, the doctor explains that feeling excessively cold isn't just due to weakness, but there are specific reasons behind it. Let's explore those reasons and how to increase natural body heat.
Why does it feel so cold?
Iron Deficiency
Dr. Zaidi explains that iron deficiency is the most common cause of coldness in the body. Iron deficiency lowers hemoglobin, which reduces the supply of oxygen through the bloodstream. This slows metabolism and reduces the body's ability to generate heat. People with this condition often experience fatigue and shortness of breath.
What to do?
Include iron-rich foods in your diet, such as spinach, chickpeas, jaggery, dates, etc. It's also important to take vitamin C along with iron so that the body can absorb it properly.
Vitamin B12 Deficiency
Vitamin B12 also plays an important role in blood production and oxygen delivery. A deficiency in B12 reduces the body's ability to generate heat, leading to cold hands and feet. Symptoms such as tingling, fatigue, and forgetfulness may also appear.
What to do?
Milk, yogurt, paneer, cheese, eggs, and non-vegetarian food (chicken, fish, red meat) are good sources of B12. If needed, supplements can be taken with the advice of a doctor.
Hypothyroidism (thyroid deficiency)
Beyond these, doctors say this is the most common and serious cause of sudden chills. Thyroid hormone controls the body's metabolism. A deficiency in thyroid hormone can make it difficult to maintain body temperature. Significant symptoms include weight gain, hair loss, fatigue, and increased chills.
What to do?
Iodine and selenium are essential for thyroid health. Include foods like iodized salt, fish, yogurt, cheese, Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, and millet in your diet. It's also important to take thyroid medication as directed by your doctor.
Doctors say, if you feel very cold, don't take it lightly. Improve your diet, increase physical activity, and get important blood tests like iron, B12, and thyroid. Once the cause is identified, treatment becomes easier, and you can live comfortably during the winter.
