Purvanchal’s cricketing landscape received a major boost as Sri Lankan pace legend Chaminda Vaas conducted a high-performance training camp in Gorakhpur. Known for his historic 8 wickets for 19 runs in ODIs, Vaas shared valuable insights with young cricketers, marking a significant moment for grassroots cricket in the region.
The MCC High Performance Camp, being आयोजित for the first time in the city, also featured renowned coach Jwala Singh and former Mumbai Ranji player Vinayak Samant. The initiative aims to provide local talent with exposure to international-level training and mentorship.
Union Minister of State for Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan, who attended as the chief guest, termed the event a proud moment for Gorakhpur. He encouraged youngsters to balance academics with sports and take inspiration from icons like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma.
During the camp, Vaas closely assessed the bowling skills of participants and emphasised the importance of “fitness and discipline” as the foundation of success across all formats of the game. “Young players are drawn to T20 cricket, but these two factors remain crucial whether you play Tests or T20s,” he said.
Vaas’s presence holds special significance given his remarkable records in international cricket. He remains the only bowler to take a hat-trick off the first three balls of an ODI match—achieved during the 2003 World Cup against Bangladesh. In that same match, he went on to claim four wickets in the opening over.
Earlier, in 2001, Vaas delivered one of the greatest bowling spells in ODI history, taking 8 wickets for just 19 runs against Zimbabwe in Colombo—a record that still stands. His performance led to Zimbabwe being bowled out for a mere 38 runs.
For aspiring cricketers in Purvanchal, the camp represents more than just training—it offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from a global legend. With such exposure, many young players now see a clearer pathway to higher levels, including the IPL and the Indian national team.
