China has embarked on a major railway project near the Line of Actual Control (LAC). This Chinese railway line will pass very close to Demchok in Ladakh. Tibetan experts have warned India to be cautious, arguing that China's expansionist plans appear extremely dangerous.

New Delhi: A Tibetan expert has warned India to be immediately vigilant about China's activities across the Line of Actual Control (LAC). China has already been very active in cross-border construction in the Arunachal sector. However, it has now begun laying a railway line in the western sector of the LAC, which is considered strategically sensitive. While Xi Jinping's government has launched a campaign to put Tibet, the capital of Tibet under its control, on the railway map by laying a railway line to Lhasa, the military and security implications of this for India cannot be ignored.

China invests in railway line in Tibet

The new strategic railway line China has embarked on in the name of improving connectivity in Central Tibet is set to dramatically increase its ability to move troops and transport other military resources in the border areas adjacent to India. According to a report by news agency ANI, experts believe that at the pace at which Beijing has begun work on this daunting project, it could complete it in five years. In fact, it plans to build a total rail network of 5,000 kilometers across the Tibetan Plateau over the next decade.

Tsewang Dorjee, a research scholar at the Tibet Policy Institute Studying Infrastructure Development in the Himalayas, says China's new railway line and highway project near the Indian border are linked to ongoing security activities. Dorjee said, "In the eastern sector, China has already taken control of water resources near Arunachal Pradesh to use against South Asian countries. Now, in the western sector, it is laying a new railway line near the border adjoining Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. China has become alert after Operation Sindoor."

Military operations and monitoring of natural resources

Tibetan experts say that China is not only laying a new railway line in this area, but is also building a highway between Nagchu and Ngari. This is apparently being done to facilitate the movement of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in the region. According to them, "If tensions escalate into conflict, these infrastructure projects will benefit China. Beyond security, these railways will also help China exploit Tibet's vast natural resources, such as uranium and lithium, which are crucial given the global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and technology."

The line will pass very close to the LAC in Ladakh.

Tenzin Tsundue, a Tibetan writer and activist, said of China's project, "This railway will run through western Tibet, passing near Mount Kailash and Ngari, to Shigatse in central Tibet, and through Aksai Chin to reach East Turkestan." He specifically pointed out that the proposed route China is working on is within 20-30 kilometers of the Demchok border in Ladakh. He said, "It is being built on a war footing and could be completed in five years. This is a major security concern for India, as the railway runs parallel to the Indian Himalayas, through Nepal and Uttarakhand. India's own railway project in this region is still in the planning stages."

Expansionist China's agenda against India!

They say that the area China has set its sights on, the western plains of Tibet, holds vast reserves of gold, copper, zinc, and lithium. According to Tenzin, "This project is for both mining and military dominance. It reveals China's expansionist policy and its intention to control the Indian Himalayan region." Overall, both Tibetan experts agree that whatever China is doing is a deliberate move and will have significant security and geopolitical implications for India, Tibet, and the entire Himalayan region.
