Munnar, the picturesque hill station in South India, has been listed among Asia’s top eight rural destinations in a recent report by Agoda. Known for its lush greenery, rolling hills, and serene atmosphere, Munnar has become a favorite for travelers seeking peaceful and nature-filled getaways. The list also includes Kampan Highlands in Malaysia, Khao Yai in Thailand, Puncak in Indonesia, Fijikawagicho in Japan, Kenting in Taiwan, Sapa in Vietnam, and Pyeongchang in South Korea.
Located in the Idukki district of Kerala and forming part of the Western Ghats, Munnar is often referred to as the “Kashmir of South India.” Agoda’s analysis, based on travel-related searches between February 15 and August 15, 2025, revealed that modern travelers increasingly prefer offbeat and tranquil destinations over commercialized spots. Visitors now value solo travel, cultural experiences, and wellness opportunities, making Munnar an ideal choice.
Among the must-visit attractions in and around Munnar is the Eravikulam National Park, situated about 13 km away, which is home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. Mattupetty Dam and Lake, also 13 km from Munnar, offers a calm setting surrounded by hills and forests, perfect for photography and bird-watching. Nyayamakad Gap on the Munnar-Coimbatore Road impresses with its 1,600-meter-high waterfall, making it a popular trekking and picnic spot. Other notable sites include Echo Point, Puthanduview Point, Anamudi Peak, and Wonder Valley Adventure and Amusement Park, all offering opportunities for relaxation and quality time with family and friends. Munnar’s inclusion in Agoda’s list highlights its growing appeal as a serene and culturally rich destination in Asia.
