The Indian Army is about to receive a major boost. The Ministry of Defence has approved the procurement of night sights (image intensifiers) for the SIG 716 assault rifle at a cost of approximately ₹659.47 crore.
New Delhi: The Indian Army is about to grow stronger. The Ministry of Defense has signed an agreement worth approximately ₹659.47 crore for the purchase of several accessories, including image intensifiers. The Ministry of Defense issued a press release stating that the night sights will enable soldiers to take full advantage of the SIG 716 assault rifle's long effective range.
Capable of accurate aiming even in the dark
According to a Ministry of Defence press release, the procured night sights will be effective in both starlight and low-light conditions. They will be capable of accurately engaging targets at effective ranges of up to 500 metres, providing superior performance compared to today's passive night sights (PNS).
An important step towards self-reliance
According to the Defence Ministry, this procurement has been classified as (Indian-IDDM), with more than 51 per cent indigenous content made in the country, which is a significant step towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
