La Liga: Dani Olmo Seals Barcelona's Comeback Victory at Rayo on Debut

Dani Olmo made a memorable debut for Barcelona by scoring the decisive goal in their 2-1 comeback win against Rayo Vallecano in La Liga on Tuesday. The Spanish playmaker’s 82nd-minute goal secured Barcelona’s third consecutive win under new coach Hansi Flick, marking a strong start to the season. Olmo, who was only registered with La Liga earlier that day after his transfer from RB Leipzig, made an immediate impact after coming off the bench at Rayo's Vallecas stadium.

In the first half, Rayo took the lead through Unai Lopez, capitalizing on a sluggish Barcelona. However, Olmo’s introduction at halftime energized the Catalans. Pedri equalized before Olmo struck the winning goal.

Reflecting on his debut, Olmo expressed his excitement, saying, “I’ve been eagerly waiting to play since I arrived. I felt physically ready, and I’m very happy to have made my debut and contributed to the team.”

Despite the win, there was concern for 17-year-old Marc Bernal, who was substituted after twisting his knee. Coach Hansi Flick expressed his worry about the injury, noting that the victory felt bittersweet given the circumstances.

Rayo Vallecano, celebrating their centenary year, had recently signed former Real Madrid star James Rodriguez, who watched the game from the presidential box. The hosts started strong, with Jorge De Frutos assisting Lopez for Rayo’s opening goal.

Barcelona struggled in the first half, with only brief moments of brilliance from teenager Lamine Yamal. At halftime, Flick made tactical changes, including bringing on Olmo, who immediately influenced the game. He played in a central attacking midfield role, with Raphinha shifting to the left wing.

Barcelona intensified their pressure, with Pedri scoring the equalizer after a clever exchange with Raphinha. Though Robert Lewandowski had a goal disallowed after a controversial VAR review, Barcelona continued to press forward. Olmo eventually scored the winner after being set up by Yamal.

Reflecting on his goal, Olmo said, “I always look to score, and I’m very happy to have finished well.”

Barcelona’s performance in the second half was marked by an energy and fitness level that has often been lacking in recent years. This victory ensures Barcelona remains at the top of the table after three matches, despite injuries to key players like Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, and Ronald Araujo.

Looking ahead, Real Madrid will face Las Palmas on Thursday, while Atletico Madrid hosts Espanyol on Wednesday.
