On Thursday, a team of doctors in Bengaluru operated on the stomach of an eight-year-old girl. There was something inside the stomach that left the doctors stunned. It was not a worm but a clump of hair the size of a cricket ball. 

The child's parents told the doctor that the child had not eaten properly for the last two years. They also gave the child medicines thinking that it was gastritis (stomach problems), but when it did not help, they brought her to the hospital for examination. 

The girl is suffering from this rare disease 

Doctors at Bengaluru's Aster Children and Women's Hospital found that the girl had a rare disease called trichophagia. In this, the patient has a habit of eating hair. It is also known as Rapunzel syndrome.

a kind of mental disorder 

Dr Manjari Somasekhar, Senior Consultant of pediatric Surgery, told IANS, "It is very unusual for a girl to have this rare disease at such a young age. It is usually associated with trichophagia, a psychological disorder in which a person eats hair. It is usually seen in older girls."

Hair removal by open surgery

To remove the hair, the girl underwent an open surgery called laparotomy. Because the hair clump was too big and sticky and the condition was too complicated for endoscopy. According to the doctors, after a surgery of two hours and fifty minutes, the operation was successful.

How dangerous is Rapunzel syndrome?

If the disease is not treated early, problems like malnutrition, anemia, and stomach bleeding can arise. This can even lead to death.
